Best DIY Laundry Detergent

Best DIY DetergentOk I know I was really excited about my first recipe for DIY laundry detergent, but unfortunately…it’s not gonna cut it. Well to be honest, it was good while it lasted, for regular soiled clothes, but the true test came when my daughters caught a vomiting virus a couple of weeks ago. I had to wash their sheets, blankets and clothes 2-3 times to get the smell out. Eww.

So I asked my sister which DIY detergent they used, and she told me about this one. I asked her if she thought it was strong enough to handle vomit and while she hasn’t experienced that personally, she did vouch for the fact that it works on her sons underwear, and that he poops his pants daily. Nice.

The recipe we used was from this blogger, and she has hundreds of comments about its success. You can check out the link if you are interested, and you can see how I made it below!

*My disclaimer is that this recipe does require more than my previous detergent, and is not as “natural”. However a plus side to this new recipe is that it only requires 1-2 tablespoons, yes tablespoons, per load. Pretty awesome, right? Making just one batch of this stuff could easily last you an entire YEAR! For less than $30! You just mix together the following:

Best DIY Detergent

Grate soap like cheese

(All of the items above can be found in the detergent aisle at Walmart except for the baking soda which is on the baking aisle)

I have washed about 10 loads with this DIY detergent and have no complaints thus far. I’ll let you know how I feel about it the next time we get sick. Let me know what you think of it too!

  1. This is the detergent I made. It really does work on vomit. I’m thinking it is the oxiclean and purex that really helps. I still have lots left…we don’t do 6 loads a week but I do have a husband who doesn’t know how to follow directions and uses too much detergent. It is still cheaper to make it this way even if my husband uses too much.

  3. This is the recipe I use and it is awesome. It gets out most stains, the only I have found that I have to do a little extra is new baby yellow poop. BUT if you do the whole Hyrogen peroxide, dawn, baking soda as a pretreatment, you just won’t have stains…

  4. Hi Janna! I had made my own laundry detergent for a while with a recipe much like the one above. Unfortunately, after months of using it I could really see my “whites” getting “dingy-looking”.. Just quickly losing their white/bright/clean look. I could not see how that was happening because of all the great products combined – but it did. I used the “home-made” for a couple of years, but have decided to no longer make it because I don’t think it was cleaning my clothes good. I also enjoy that light/clean scent that I get when using Gain. I even tried adding drops of essential oils and other tips I had read about to the detergent I was making, but it did not help.

    1. Thanks for letting me know Connie. I will be on the lookout for that. (I have had that happen to my whites with my previous DIY detergent. Hoping this recipe works better on whites!)
