Since we moved into our house one thing that we’ve constantly combated was bugs; I needed the best insecticide. We’ve found large spiders also known as wolf spiders, heck we’ve even found scorpions in our bedroom! When you find bugs like these in and around your home it leaves you with a sense of unease. I’ve always been scared of waking up to a bug on my face; luckily that has never happened.
So I did what any sensible new homeowner would do, I called the Orkin man. He came to our house with all sorts of materials, showed us pictures of his family then proceeded to sell us the Orkin pest control service.
He quoted us something close to $50/month; it shocked me at how high the price was. So, I kindly turned him away. He called me several times after that to harass me more about it. I still had a bug problem though so I went to Home Depot and bought myself a sprayer and something off the shelf that claimed to kill bugs, I think it’s called Hot Shot.
I sprayed the house right before we were about to leave town. When we came back, our home resembled more of a bug graveyard than a place where people live.
The results impressed me but I soon found that after only a few weeks we would start to see bugs again. Oh and by the way, the sprayer I bought from Home Depot broke after the first application. After returning the cheapo sprayer I went to the local Tractor Supply and bought their beefier model, it’s worked great since.
I tried a few other products that claimed to last longer but I was getting the same results. After letting the problem simmer for a while I found myself speaking with my brother in-law about the situation. Turns out he used to sell pest control services. It sounds like the same program that sends people to sell alarm systems for a summer. He told me the best insecticide that professional pest control services use, is Cy-kick CS and that it can be bought from several online retailers without a permit.
After reading about it, I found the biggest difference between the stuff I was buying at Home Depot and Cy-Kick CS was that Cy-kick CS is a controlled-release insecticide which means it stays just as potent at the end of the specified time frame it’s good for. The reviews on it are great. I bought a pint from amazon.com for about $40 after shipping. It will be good for about 5 applications at my home.

So I figure $50/month = $600/yr for Orkin, or Cy-kick CS $40 + sprayer $20 = $60/year= $5/month I’ll choose the latter. Check out how much this would cost after 10 years, crazy!
If you are considering doing your own pest control be sure to follow the detailed instructions that come with the product. I usually don’t read instructions to things because I’m a guy, but this project was something I knew very little about. The instructions tell you how much insecticide to mix per gallon, areas to focus on in and around your home, and health/safety information.
This is one of the many ways we try to cut expenses so that Janna can live her dream of being a stay at home mom. She wrote a great article “How to survive on one income” that outlines some of the many things we do to save money. Good Luck!
