DIY Dishwasher Detergent

DIY DISH DETERGENTWhere would I be today without Pinterest and all of the wonderful DIY recipes? That’s how I found out about this DIY dishwasher detergent. I have been making my own for almost a year now, and I will never go back to buying regular detergent.

Let me explain why I am hooked…

  • It is cheaper than buying a brand of detergent
  • Making one batch of this will last for months
  • The ingredients are simple. In fact, half of the ingredients are what we used to make the DIY laundry detergent. So you probably still have them on hand!
  • There are no “fillers” in this recipe. I’m no scientist, but I think that detergent companies are pumping up their products with fillers so that we need to buy more of it, more often. (In my opinion)

Now let me give you a peek at the ingredients, which can all be found on the detergent aisle except for the kosher salt. (That’s in the spice section of the baking aisle.)

Stir for 3 days2 cups Borax
2 cups Super Washing Soda
1-2 cups Lemi Shine (depending on how hard your water is)
1 cup Kosher Salt

Mix the above ingredients in a bowl, and let it sit on your counter for a few days. Stir it at least once Store in an airtight containera day while on your counter to avoid clumping. Then simply transfer the detergent in an airtight container. I used an old Tupperware drink container, a Yankee candle jar, and an empty vinegar jug. You could even use a Ziploc bag if you had to.

Oh and you will need one more thing! White vinegar. Every time you run the dish washer, you willvinegar need a rinse aid to assist the detergent, and good ol’ white vinegar will do the trick. I fill my small container about 1/2 full and place it in the top rack before starting the dishwasher. It works great and I would love to hear how your DIY Dishwasher Detergent works for you!

I was using this exact recipe last year but I got tired of all the hardening and clumping (why I didn’t think to simply stir it once a day…can I blame it on the fact that I was pregnant at the time and had “the pregnancy brain”?) so I switched back to store detergent. Maybe I’ll give it a try again. 😀

I’ve been looking for a recipe for this for awhile, so thanks for sharing! I can’t wait to finally switch over, it just seems healthier and so much cheaper.
