Homemade Fruit Smoothies

Smoothie We have been on a smoothie kick over here for the last month. While I love the taste of Smoothie King and Planet Smoothie, I don’t like paying the inflated price. Which is why I have been making our own homemade fruit smoothies.

At first I was using a 1950’s Oster blender that had seen better days. It was taking about 20 minutes to whip up a batch of smoothies, but my thoughtful mother-in-law purchased a NINJA blender for us (anniversary present) and now it takes less than five minutes!

I make a batch of smoothies once a day for everyone in the family, and we all love it. Moo moo literally does not stop sucking on her straw until she has ingested every last drop. I don’t know if she gets a brain freeze or if she doesn’t have the sense to care. LOL!

Smoothies are extremely versatile and healthy, so you can totally make this work for you. Here’s what I have been using.

A big handful of fresh spinach

Spinach

About a tablespoon of flax seed

Flax Seed

One frozen banana

Banana

Several frozen strawberries

Strawberries

Several frozen blueberries

Blueberries

Enough milk to run the blender smoothly

Milk

Enough honey to bring out the sweetness in the fruit

Honey

Blend that baby up and you will have enough homemade fruit smoothies for four people. It tastes so good and you won’t even notice the spinach or flax. But you are definitely getting the healthy bonus! I’m interested in using carrots too, any suggestions on that? Also, could I substitute the milk for water? Experiment with me and let me know how it goes! 🙂

These look yummy! I usually do use 1 1/2 cups of water and it’s very hydrating. I’ve also been adding some kale with the spinach and I do chia seeds instead of flax sometimes. I also add greek yogurt sometimes and agave or honey. I need a ninja–that looks so nice!!!

Thanks for those tips Lisa. I just did 1/2 milk and 1/2 water today to start weaning us off the milk. 🙂 It was great!

We use baby carrots and raw sweet potato and you can’t taste either one! We also use apple sometimes.

Thanks Laura-Leigh, I will try the carrots tomorrow.
